107 Days

I just wanted to make mention of the 107 Days Campaign for Justice for LB, Connor Sparrowhawk who suffered a preventable death at the hands of a negligent health authority. Read a brief version of his tragic story here: http://107daysofaction.wordpress.com/about-107days/ This campaign is close to my heart since my own little dude came so close … Continue reading 107 Days

Margin

Just a little thought for today. I have several books on the topic of 'Margin'. That is, the space between what you have to deal with and how much you can cope with. If you don't have much margin inbetween the two, you burnout. Burnout is a word that lots of people use to describe … Continue reading Margin

DD101 – TMA 03

I have just finished the third TMA (essay) for my Open University Course, DD101 Introducing the Social Sciences. I didn't think I could do it at all, in fact this essay has had me in tears and convinced that not only I don't want to carry on with this particular bit of the course, but … Continue reading DD101 – TMA 03

#Luke2Acts – Some Notes on Luke 1 and 2

Just a quick share of a great post on the new Twitter Bible study we’re doing – one chapter a day from Luke to Acts. I just love the inter-connectedness and repeating themes and symbolism of scripture, and I love that I’m seeing new things in these old, familiar passages that I’ve never seen before. Join us! 🙂

Alastair's Adversaria

Yesterday the new Twitter group Bible study, #Luke2Acts, began with Luke 1 and today we have been looking at Luke 2. The following are some of the thoughts that I have had while reading the first couple of chapters. Most of them aren’t original and any that are original should be held very lightly: they are possible connections and interpretations, rather than sure ones.

I don’t plan to continue this as a series of posts. However, I thought that I would whet your appetite and encourage you to get involved. Just use the hashtag #Luke2Acts on Twitter. We would love for as many people as possible to join us!

The connections between Luke, Acts, and Samuel are especially noteworthy. All three books begin with prayer in the temple. The connections will multiply as we go through the passage.

Like Exodus and 1 Samuel, the story of…

New Term #homeed #dyslexia

I'm spending today planning, thinking, wondering how to proceed when we start back with homeschooling tomorrow. I'm glad of an extra day, as I have been putting off thinking about it, and the weekend has been busy with visitors. But my eldest is still home as it's a teacher's 'inset' day, so I decided I … Continue reading New Term #homeed #dyslexia

Finding a Trail

I don't normally make a big deal of Easter - I normally try to keep passover and if it coincides with Easter, well and good, but if it doesn't, it's just another weekend. This year though we have relatives visiting over the long weekend, with all the attending issues of a family holiday. It has … Continue reading Finding a Trail

DD101 Making Social Lives, Chapter 5

I am very behind - not least because I get distracted by other things. But I am trying to catch up. In my reading today, of chapter 5 of Making Social Lives, on p. 229 the author says: "the argument should not be based on the idea that there once existed a high street that … Continue reading DD101 Making Social Lives, Chapter 5

Liberty

I learned today, via a contact on Twitter, Rachel Barenblat, the @VelveteenRabbi (I hope you get the literary reference) that Israel has a policy of detaining Palestinian suspects without charge, sometimes for years. I don't know how I have been unaware of this fact, except that I probably tend to see Israel with slightly rose-tinted … Continue reading Liberty

Half Term

I hardly feel I deserve it, we've accomplished so little in terms of verifiable, quantifiable pieces of work this term. We never used to follow the schools term timetable. But somehow, now, I feel I need a break more than ever. This week and next, Dragon-tamer is home from sixth form college, so it's nice … Continue reading Half Term

Cleaning Deadlines

We have a property inspection tomorrow morning. It's one of the many down sides to renting. But as much as I'm dreading it, there is nothing like an externally imposed deadline for motivating you to get things done. So although there is still work to do today, the house is looking tidier and cleaner and … Continue reading Cleaning Deadlines
